The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a significant honors show approaches, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
