Taking action inspired by fictional guards, Denmark's foreign ministry has initiated a nighttime monitoring team—far from guarding against mythical threats, but to track Donald Trump as Copenhagen sleeps.

This night monitoring starts at 5pm in Denmark each day and ends with a summary produced at 7 a.m., which is then distributed throughout the Danish government and concerned agencies covering statements made and events taking place.

The role is believed to have been introduced following the diplomatic dispute involving Copenhagen and the US regarding Greenland earlier this year, when the US president suggested taking control of the strategic island.

Analysts note that this initiative is one of several examples of how Denmark's foreign policy and its government administration have had to adapt to the changed landscape of the Trump's current term.

A source close to the ministry remarked, “It is fair to say that the circumstances in Greenland and the time difference separating Denmark and the United States was a significant factor introducing this arrangement in the spring.”

Rather than all staff having to promptly check their devices to stay informed on updates from the United States, the foreign office explained it had undertaken a collective effort to stay updated on Trump activities.

An expert, a ex- chief analyst at the defense intelligence service, stated that this move showed, “as we have always known,” that the idea of the United States as Denmark's primary ally was dead. “Alliances are founded on shared principles and a common threat perception,” Kaarsbo said. “Trump shares neither of those with us and I would argue he doesn't share it with the majority of Europe.”
