A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country grappling with rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the downtown area on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old presenter was accosted by three individuals, with one began shooting at him before escaping on foot.

The reason of the incident is unknown and no suspects have been apprehended have been made, as per the official statement.

Police revealed that Stock was targeted as he was leaving a premises in the vicinity of the city center landmark.

He had been present for hours at the building supervising the installation of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, according to reports.

"It is alleged the victim was confronted by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," authorities said.

CCTV footage reportedly depicted a individual with dreadlocks and wearing what looked like a security uniform firing shots on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but succumbed to his injuries across the street.

Police added that Stock had an gun that was not fired and no items were stolen during the assault.

Key evidence, like bullet casings, were recovered from the scene.

Police have appealed eyewitnesses who may have witnessed the attack to assist with the investigation.

"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the attack, and police have been following their trail to find their whereabouts," stated a police chief.
