When I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a football he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and raw talent won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his path in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
However, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning home,” Camara said.
A Landmark Season and Continental Breakthrough
That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.
Soon after, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits a need to temper his aggression, after being shown red early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.
Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals
With his current club, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
