Scream Original Star the Actor Fears He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.

The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a major family reunion. This new chapter marks the iconic return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters making a comeback.

"Returning to a character you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.

A Triumphant Return for Fallon Favorites

It has been established that three distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, despite dying in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their resurrection remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the return of the endearing and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Legendary Status

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a brief appearance is a dream come true, even if he is terrified about the audience response. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he got the offer from the series creator.

"I recall the phone call. I remember the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That instance is permanently etched on my psyche," he says. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which made Lillard feeling quite nervous.

"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he explains. "A character that is now represented in every single Scream mask that appears every Halloween."

The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom

Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the finished film. He admits to feeling significant anxiety about not wanting to be the one who damages the beloved franchise.

"It's either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "At the start, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the franchise. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Theories and Excitement Run High

While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back persists. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a prior storyline. Alternatively, perhaps they are somehow still living in a bizarre shared scenario. The chance of a meta-horror story, inspired by earlier horror movies, also exists.

Audiences will discover the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
