Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
