Members of an Italian clan of burglars who took over £1.2m worth of goods, including from former Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, have been mandated to pay back just £1 per person.

Siblings Valentino Nikolov and Giacomo, their female sibling Jela Jovanovic and her son Charlie travelled to the northeastern of the UK to raid multiple homes in spring 2024.

The foursome were jailed for from a decade or less in May 2025.

At a proceeds of crime proceeding at Newcastle Crown Court, Jela and the brothers Nikolov were instructed to pay back £1 each while Charlie must pay £1,135.

Details of the Burglaries

The judge previously heard the group came by ferry in the United Kingdom on March 27, 2024 and used a campervan as their "base of operations", which they parked at Scotch Corner and Durham rest stops while utilizing a separate vehicle to search for properties and carry out burglaries.

On 31 March they stole more than one million pounds of goods such as high-end fashion, purses, jewellery and a CBE medal from a residence on Clayton Road in Jesmond, while the owners were away.

The following night, the crew broke into a home on a gated cul-de-sac in Whitburn, South Tyneside, and stole luxury bags, valuables and shoes valued at more than £100,000.

Following surveillance of the football club's training ground for two days, they then struck at the home of Sweden player Alexander Isak in Darras Hall on 4 April, taking ten thousand pounds in money, sixty-eight thousand pounds worth of jewelry and the player's one hundred twenty thousand pound Audi RS6.

The gang, who were described by prosecutors as professional itinerant burglars, wore gloves and face coverings, switched their mobile devices on silent as they approached their objectives and strapped a number plate, which had been taken from a garage in a town, on to their car with elastic bands.

They were apprehended in the Birmingham on April 13.

Court Proceedings and Rulings

Valentino had denied the burglary plot but was convicted by the court, while his three relations had all submitted guilty pleas to the same charge.

At the criminal gains session, lawyer the prosecution said each of the burglars had benefited from their offenses to the amount of over £1.2 million, which was based on what the victims said they had lost.

But Charlie Jovanovic was the only one deemed to have any funds that could be "realised", specifically £1,135.50 which had previously been confiscated by authorities, the court was informed, with 14 days to be served in prison if he defaulted.

The other three had no money or property so were directed to pay a token amount of £1 per person, with seven days in prison the result if the money was not paid.

The judge Spragg said if they were found with property in the future, "such as driving around Italy in a sports car or possessing a property", the prosecution could seek further action to "satisfy the amount due".
